Nitrous Oxide for pain management in Dentistry:

Nitrous Oxide is commonly used in dentistry all over the world for effective management of anxiety and pain during treatments. When combined with a calculated amount of oxygen, Nitrous Oxide, also known as laughing gas, helps patients feel more comfortable and stress-free at the dental office. It is ideal for short-duration treatments such as extractions and dental fillings because the effects of the gas tend to wear off completely within a couple of hours. The use of the gas is FDA and ADA approved, and is therefore completely safe for patients in monitored doses.

Administration and effects of Nitrous Oxide:

Patients are required to wear a mask covering their mouth and nose. They are then asked to deeply inhale the mixture of oxygen and nitrous oxide through the mask. Because Nitrous Oxide has the fastest onset among most inhalation agents, it only takes a few breaths for the effects to start setting in. The patient may start feeling a tingling sensation in the body, along with a feeling of light-headedness or euphoria. This helps anxious patients relax prior to the procedure and get the treatment they need without feeling scared.
