What are veneers and what are they used for?

Dental VeneersDental veneering is currently the most popular and sought-after treatment in cosmetic dentistry all over the world. Commonly known as porcelain laminates, these fine shell-like structures are custom fabricated for each patient, and can effectively cover and conceal various imperfections of the smile such as discoloration, staining, chipped edges, uneven margins, previous colored restorations, pits, diastemas (gaps between teeth), uneven sized or shaped teeth, minor fractures, and signs of wear.
These porcelain laminates are made using high quality porcelain in a shade that matches the patient’s natural dentition, or brighter if required, and are then bonded on to the front surface of the teeth.
Dental veneers can be used to give patients a complete aesthetic smile makeover.

How is veneering done, and does it hurt?

The veneering treatment happens in a few stages.

A

Initially, during a consultation session with patients, we aim to help them understand the details of the procedure and how to maintain it

A

Anesthesia may be administered to ensure that the patient does not experience any pain or discomfort during the treatment

A

Next, the teeth that require veneers are trimmed down to a certain size and shape in order to accommodate the bonding of the veneers

A

An impression of these trimmed teeth is then taken. The shade of the natural dentition, or the shade selected by the patient is also noted down

A

Veneers are then fabricated using Porcelain in a dental laboratory based on this impression and shade selection

A

These new laminates are finally bonded on the facial surface of the teeth with the help of a strong dental cement

How are veneers cleaned and maintained?

You can clean you veneered teeth just the same way you would your normal teeth! Brush regularly and take care of your gingival health. You should however be careful when biting into hard food, because veneers are far more delicate as compared to a natural tooth’s enamel – and may fracture on impact. Fractures veneers can be remade and replaced.

If you feel shy about smiling because of a few dental flaws, you should consider porcelain veneers. It’s time to flaunt a brand-new smile! Give us a call and book an appointment with the aesthetic dentistry experts at Salado Creek Dental today!
